The dignity and beauty of the human person comes from the fact of the incarnation of God in the person of Christ. With the whole Church, St. John’s parishioners have the privilege to recognize his image and likeness within the face of every person—from the moment of his or her conception until natural death.
St. John’s has a variety of ministries to support the weak and vulnerable persons in our midst.
"When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities – to offer just a few examples – it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected. Once the human being declares independence from reality and behaves with absolute dominion, the very foundations of our life begin to crumble....”
Pope Francis
Laudato Si', #117
St. John’s House is a group home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, within our Parish, that we strive to include in parish events & activities. We donate our time to help the residents and caretakers feel included as friends and neighbors. It may be as simple as greeting them at Mass & Community Sunday; inviting them to the CYO spaghetti dinner and including them at your table; an hour or two of putting up Christmas decorations; dropping off an occasional meal; planning a neighborhood ice cream party; or perhaps some yard work or shoveling snow. The idea is “inclusion.” How much time does it take to keep them from being isolated in the middle of our caring community? Not as much as you think!
The Gabriel Project Cluster of Montgomery County is an all-volunteer non-profit that supports low-income pregnant women and their children. During the pandemic and economic crisis, the need for the Gabriel Project’s services has grown tremendously while typical sources of support are greatly reduced. Please see this flyer for more information about our virtual drive to support the Gabriel Project. You can help provide critically needed financial and material resources by donating at the Gabriel Project website www.gpmoco.org or by purchasing essential items like baby gear, diapers, and clothing through the Gabriel Project’s Amazon Charity List: GP Amazon List. Thank you for your generous support!
Each year a Memorial Mass is held in memory of those who have died during the past year from November-November. For more information, contact the parish office.
Arimatheans assist the celebrant by preparing the church for a funeral, and act as a liaison with the family during the funeral. Duties may include: Eucharist Minister, Lector, and serving the Mass in an absence of altar servers, as needed. Arimatheans tidy the pews and securely close the church after the funeral. Most of the Arimatheans are retired. On the day of the funeral it requires a couple hours of your time, normally between 10:00am and 1:00pm.
