The Legion of Mary was founded in Ireland by Franck Duff in 1921. It is a worldwide organization of Catholic men and women who sanctify themselves through prayer and spiritual work in union with Our Lady under the guidance of the clergy. The purpose of the Legion of Mary is:

1. To make its members better Catholics and to mobilize the Catholic laity.
2. To raise the spiritual level of the entire community through direct contact with and interest in every member and potential member of the Mystical Body of Christ.
3. To accomplish this through Mary, Mother of Souls and Mediatrix of All Graces.

Legionary service is fulfilled through membership. Two types of memberships are available:

• Active members attend weekly meetings of the Praesidium, perform work assigned by the pastor - provided it is in conformity with Legion rules, and daily say the Rosary and prayers from the Legion prayer leaflet. 
• Auxiliary members are those who cannot undertake the active apostolate but offer the priceless backing of their prayers. Auxiliary members say daily all the prayers from the Legion prayer leaflet.
